The seventh grade team and moderator Mrs. Marshall received a trophy for placing third overall in the event. In addition, seventh
graders Alyssa Mills placed 8th, Carli Malec 11th and Andrea Vietti 12th in the individual awards. The seventh grade team included
Christopher Baldasare, Madeline Carter, Elizabeth Clark,
Carli Malec, Alyssa Mills, Andrea Vietti and alternate Elyse Light-Mescher. Christopher, Madeline, Carli, Alyssa and Andrea will

Mrs. Quinn for assisting in the TAB room to collect and sort papers during the event.
TOURNEY TIME FOR ACADEMIC CHALLENGE, TOO!
This is a busy time of year for the Academic Challenge team. On Saturday, March 6, two teams will compete at
Mid-Ohio using the NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournament) format. The top two teams will qualify to play at Nationals.
This is the first time the local league (MOESC) has sponsored this format. It begins at 9:00 a.m. and will end around 3:00 p.m.
On March 13, the best SP team players will compete on Scholastic Showdown on WMFD TV. SPHS received a bye for the first round
since they were last year's champion! At 1:00 p.m. they compete against Mansfield Christian. If they win, they will compete at 3:30 p.m.
against the winner of the Bucyrus vs. Monroeville match. Scholastic Showdown begins airing Wednesday, March 3, at 8:00 p.m.
Because SPHS won the MOESC Tournament in December, they qualify for Ohio Academic Challenge (OAC) Regionals on April 24
(location TBA). Eight team members will participate.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK CELEBRATIONS
In celebration of the national observance of Catholic Schools Week, students and staff at St. Peter's School
were busy celebrating in many ways, among them
an all-school Mass on Tuesday with little ones sitting among their elder schoolmates, a History of St. Peter's
Parish and St. Peter's School
hosted by Sister Bernard Marie Campbell and Sister Paula Bingert who have here for many, many years, a Sunday
"Thank Our Parishioners" musical
performance and a repeat performance for high school students on Thursday, speaker Mr. Frank DiLallo on the
topic of "Dignity for All", the Brass Trio
from the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, the "move up" activity on Friday with students visiting next year's
teachers and classrooms for part of the day, and
an out-of-dress-code day.
A few photos below of the CSW all-school Mass and both Sister Bernie and Sister
Paula during the DVD presentation.
First graders sit among seniors!

Father Chris suggested students introduce themselves and say hello to each other prior to the start of Mass.

What's all the clapping about? The song, "Lord, I Lift Your Name On High"

Sister Bernie and Sister Paula hosted the DVD presentation.

KLONDIKE DERBY
From: Chris Baldasare
Scoutmaster, St. Peter’s Boy Scout Troop 121
Congratulations to St. Peter’s Boy Scout Troop 121 for their accolades at the Johnny Appleseed Trail
District Klondike Derby held last weekend. Our Scouts took 1st place in the lashing competition, 2nd
place for knot tying, 3rd place for fire building, and 3rd place for the compass course. And placed 6th
overall out of 21 patrols competing! Congratulations Scouts!
(Just before the turn of the last century, gold prospectors traveled the sub-zero reaches of Alaska by means
of dogs and sleds. They camped out in all kinds of winter weather, and therefore needed adequate survival skills,
which they learned from the native Eskimos. Scouting has incorporated this theme in the Klondike Derby---where Scouts
put their Scouting skills to work in the field, demonstrating teamwork, Scout spirit, and have fun outdoors on winter days.

THIRD ANNUAL - ALUMNI VISITATION DAY
Twenty-four SPHS alum who are now in college woke up at the crack of dawn on Wednesday to breakfast in the
high school library with each other and SP teachers and staff members and, then later, visit with the senior class to talk about
preparing themselves for college, adjustments to college, etc.
Prior to their trek up to Assisi Hall where they were to meet up with the seniros, Father Tony gave a blessing, Sister Bernard Marie
distributed her famous fudge and a Christmas ornament to each alum, and principal, Mrs. Tressa Reith, welcomed them and
offered to treat them to a cafeteria lunch after the program.
Thanks to Mike Mulherin who agreed to again facilitate the morning discussion through senior theology classes and, to the alums'
delight, had his coffee/hot chocolate cart in tow!
Request for alum participant interest was accomplished through the October
publication and emailing those alum who have email addresses registered with the St. Peter's Alumni Office. Twenty-four
responded for this year's Alum Visitation Day and it was great to have them back in the halls of SPHS!
Knowing that for many of these college students it was one of their first days home for Christmas break and
that they ordinarily would
have been "sleeping in" made us especially grateful! Photos below. (Group photo coordinated by none other than the
master - Sister Bernard Marie!)

Yes, you read it correctly! In an ongoing effort to always be better communicators to our parishioners,
school parents, and community friends, there
will be a universal calendar posted on the St. Peter's
website beginning December 1.
This is one busy place
around here and the calendar will include ALL parish and school events (parish meetings, athletic events, special activities, field trips, etc., etc., etc.) If someone
wants to know what's happening around St. Peter's, there
will be no better place to find it more quickly than viewing the universal
calendar!
Stay tuned for more information about this new
section of the SP website!
VETERAN'S DAY PARADE
The St. Peter's Marching Band participated in the November 11 Veteran's Day Parade and, prior to their departure for Park Avenue West, gave us an opportunity
to take a photograph of the entire group.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE - ROCK GARDEN
Here at St. Peter's High School in September (see recent news on September 17), Mrs. Maryanne Chengelis had her classes do several projects to celebrate the
International Day of Peace. Over the PA announcements at noon, there was a minute of silence while students thought
and prayed for world peace. Her theology and Child Development classes also created peace posters which now hang in
the school hallways. They hung blue plastic cups in the fence to form the word "peace" and painted peace rocks which
were to be used for a rock garden at the entrance of the high school. A photo below of the peace garden that was just finished last week in the front foyer of the high
school.
DAYCARE HALLOWEEN
Mrs. Chengelis and the students in her Child Development class provided a Halloween book reading and craft time to the St. Peter's Daycare
children last week. Photos below!

CHANGE OF DATE!!!
The Fall Sports Banquet and Awards event has been moved to Wednesday,
October 28, with the meal in the cafeteria at 6:00 pm and the awards to follow in
the Robert Frye Auditorium.
This change is necessary because Saturday’s Girls Soccer tournament game at Mansfield Christian could not be played and has been re-scheduled for today at 5:00. Upon winning, the team will play again tomorrow. That makes Wednesday the closest possible makeup date for awards. Special thanks to our cafeteria staff and athletic boosters for so cheerfully making this adjustment. Special thanks, also, to all of our fall sports athlete families.
Check the "Week at a Glance" activity schedule often, posted at the beginning of each week.

TAKING NOTES . . .
. . . and not the way most of us older folks remember taking them in school! These eighth graders are taking notes from Mrs. Geiger's lecture
on Louis Bromfield in language arts class this past Monday. Once finished with the lecture, Mrs. Geiger talked with them about the art of
note-taking----not just using the netbook correctly but also deciding what points in a lecture are important to remember.
A netbook is an extremely lightweight personal computer. Netbook computers typically weigh less than 6 pounds and are small
enough to fit easily in a briefcase. Aside from size and portability, the principal difference between a netbook
computer and a personal computer is the display screen. Netbook computers use a variety of techniques, known as
flat-panel technologies, to produce a lightweight and non-bulky display screen. In terms of computing power,
modern netbook computers are nearly equivalent to personal computers. They have
the same CPUs, memory capacity, and disk drives. Netbook computers come with battery packs that enable
the user to run them without plugging them in.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT SCHOLAR AWARDS FOR ST. PETERS' HIGH SCHOOL
The AP Program offers several AP Scholar Awards to recognize high school students who have demonstrated college-level
achievement through AP courses and exams taken during high school. Although there is no monetary award, in addition
to receiving an award certificate, this achievement is acknowledged on any AP Score Report that is sent to colleges
during the fall of his/her freshman year.
Congratulations to the eight St. Peter's High School members of the Class of 2009 who have earned the
distinction of AP Scholar, AP Scholar With Honor, or AP Scholar With Distinction.

ADVOCATE FOR THE HOMELESS
Diane Nilan, who travels cross country throughout the year as an advocate for the homeless, spoke to juniors in theology class about understanding the
homeless and how "close to home" they are more than we think. Diane visits at least one time each year as she travels across the country. A few photos
below of Diane as she talks with juniors.
READYING FOR THEIR FIRST MARCH OF THE YEAR
Mr. Lew Friend practices turns with high school members of the SPS Marching Band. More practice next week with other groups as they ready

to Mr. Friend so mark your calendar now to enjoy the parade!

THE BEGINNING IS THE END AND THE END IS THE BEGINNING
Put everything in reverse in the cafeteria line this year and add a decorative and practical touch of wall!
In an effort to make things run more smoothly, what used to be the beginning of the cafeteria line is now the point of payment. And
what used to be the end of the cafeteria line is now where students grab a tray. Students enter the line at the center of the cafeteria so that once they reach the
hot food and main lunch entree, they just have to pay and they're on their way to their table.
A la carte items have also been pulled
from the main line and are now sold separately at each end of the cafeteria. And to add to the change of pace, metal/glass dividing walls
now separate the cafeteria line from the flow of traffic so that food is exposed to only those making their way through the line.
The art club, too, has added splashes of color with thematic paintings on the glass walls. Photos below!
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
In 1981, the United Nations General Assembly declared, in a resolution sponsored by Costa Rica, that September 21 was to be celebrated
as the International Day of Peace devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace. Tuesday, September 21, 1982, was the first occurrence of the International Day of Peace.
As awareness expands ever more rapidly, now in 2009, hundreds of worldwide peace-oriented organizations continue to think globally and act locally with thousands of Global Peace Day events each year.
Here at St. Peter's High School, Mrs. Maryanne Chengelis had her classes do several projects to celebrate the International Day of Peace.
Over the PA announcements at noon, there was a minute of silence while students thought and prayed for world peace. Her theology and Child Development
classes also created peace posters which now hang in the school hallways. They hung blue plastic cups in the fence to form the word "peace" and painted peace rocks which will be used for a rock garden at the entrance
of the high school. And for a short time, until the rain started, they stood in the formation of a peace symbol on the church parking lot. A few photos below of some of the projects.
PRAYER AT THE POLE
It did rain but that didn't stop the national observance of Prayer at the Pole day at St. Peter's High School. Instead of
the front steps of the high school, students and a few staff gathered in the Robert Frye Gymnasium.
The Spiritual Life class organized the annual "Prayer at the Pole" event with donuts and
juice following for all those early birds who came to pray together. Thank you to Mr. Henrich and the Spiritual Life
team for planning the event.

SMARTBOARD BUSY!
To enhance and energize classroom instruction, many teachers make use of the SMARTboard, an interactive whiteboard
that brings a new level of interactivity to any classroom or boardroom. We remember blackboards. Think of the SMARTboard
as a blackboard but with enhanced features. The SMARTboard is connected to a computer and a data projector. With this table
or ceiling mount data projector, the image on the computer screen is projected onto the SMARTboard that can be then used as a
computer with the touch-sensitive display by just using your finger to control it.
DESIGN PROJECT
Last week, Mr. Frank Daniell, talked with students about the specifics of a design assignment. A few photos below

WELCOME BACK TO THE RECENT NEWS PAGE!
Because parents need to be notified that their children's photos might be posted on the website unless they choose otherwise in candids
taken throughout the school day, we need to wait until mid-September to post current year "recent news" information and photos. Now that several weeks have passed after
notifying parents, we are ready to go! Enjoy the recent news for the 2009-2010 school year!

OPENING ALL-SCHOOL LITURGY
Wednesday, September 2, was the first all-school liturgy at St. Peter's School. Upon their entry to the church, students donated canned goods
which were to be given to Catholic Charities. Together, Fr. Tony Borgia and Fr. Chris Bazar celebrated with
students in grades 1-12 with the high school choir and high school musicians leading students in song. At the end of Mass, all members of
student council recited their pledge of good leadership. And then, the favorite song! Photos below!
