MOVE UP DAY!
One of the many activities of Catholic Schools Week was "Move Up Day" when all grade levels from first through sixth grade spent a little time
in the classrooms that will be their home for next school year! Sixth graders pictured here walked over with Mr. Smith to the junior high/high school building and met
up with Mrs. Reith so they could spend part of the day on the junior high floor and in the classrooms there.
KEY BANK VISITORS
Representatives from Key Bank visited the first graders in January to talk about employment opportunities at a bank, what a bank does and how important it is to save your money.
And teacher Mrs. Sue Scheurer reported that the highlight, of course, was meeting Keytoon the mascot. Thank you to Mrs. Scheurer for sending this information and the photos!

MOONJAR
Over the past summer, St. Peter's Elementary School children were given the opportunity to work with the "Moonjar".
Three sections of an odd shaped bank--marked Spend, Save, and Share--served as a teaching tool connecting
wish-upon-a-star hopes with conscientious decision making and financial objectives.
On Friday, November 11,
the students who submitted a report on how they used their Moonjar were recognized at an assembly. Special
prizes for outstanding work with the Moonjar went to Tommy Siegenthaler, Teaira Ross, Grace Maurer, Maggie
Allred, Keirstyn Carpenter, Lauren Haus and Alec Baldasare.
Congratulations to all our students for their
fine effort, and many thanks to the Monsignor Dunn Foundation for its sponsorship and to all those who helped
promote and implement the program.

ST. PETER'S BOY SCOUT TROOP 121 HEADING TO PHILMONT, NEW MEXICO IN 2012
Consecutively chartered by St. Peter's Parish since 1950, Troop 121
currently consists of 24 registered Scouts, 12 adult leaders and 21
Committee members. Fifteen Scouts and eight adult leaders will be going to
the Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, New Mexico in June of 2012. The trip
will consist of riding the Amtrak train to New Mexico followed by 12 days of
backpacking over 70 miles through the 137,000 acre mountainous terrain.
The life skills these young men experience on the trail will be invaluable
throughout the rest of their lives. They will learn the importance of
teamwork, self-reliance, and perseverance. As an adult, they will be able to
draw on these experiences when times are tough and will be able to continue
when others give up.
The Scouts and Scout leaders have been working hard in preparation for their
trip both physically and financially.
Physically they have already hiked over 51 miles throughout the state of
Ohio.
Scouts have been holding various fund raising events throughout the year,
including selling popcorn, parking cars, holding bake sales, and picking up
trash.
Most recently, the Mansfield Y Running Club teamed up with St. Peter's Boy
Scout Troop 121 to host a 5K race. The Trek or Treat 5K Run/Walk took place
on October 23, 2011, through the creepy, spooky, and possibly haunted
Woodland Neighborhood of Mansfield, Ohio. Runners from all over the state
participated-215 total!
The 5K was an awesome way to benefit St. Peter's Boy Scout troop 121's 2012
contingent trip to Philmont Scout Ranch while putting focus on physical
fitness for both youth and adults all while giving back to our community.
This is another example of the strong traditions that St. Peter's Boy Scout
troop 121 is a part of today because of the generous support, great
leadership and guidance of the Scout leaders, Scout parents, parishioners
and adult committee members of St. Peter's Boy Scout Troop 121.

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS!
Ohio legislators have submitted proposals to expand Ohio's school voucher programs and create new ones, allowing Ohio
families to direct their children's state education funding to the school of their choice.
House Bill 136 recently passed out of the House Education Committee!
The next step is a vote in the full Ohio House
of Representatives and then in the Senate. This "Parental Choice and Taxpayer Savings" (PACT) Scholarship (House Bill136/Senate
Bill 128) is an income-based voucher program that would include prospective St. Peter's School families and would also include
families who now have students attending St. Peter's School.
If you have recently contacted your legislators in support of this bill, thank you! Your action is helping the bill make
progress! Please continue to write, call, email, or meet with your local legislators. The legislators you elected need to
hear your story about how scholarships would help your family and community.

In order to keep up with the fast pace of technology, staff at the elementary school attended either of two sessions offered
by technology coordinator David Evans.
Mr. Evans explained and demonstrated the use of the iPad, a line of tablet computers designed, developed and
marketed by Apple Inc. primarily as a platform for audio-visual
media including books, periodicals, movies, music, games, and web
content. Its size and weight falls between those of contemporary
smartphones and laptop computers.
The iPad has several uses in the classroom and has been praised as a valuable tool for instruction.

DUNN FOUNDATION MOONJARS
On Friday, June 3, St. Peter’s students participated in an assembly during the school day. The presentation was organized
by the St. Peter's Elementary and Junior High Student Council, co-moderated by Mrs. Jackie Kulka and Miss Angie Dillon.
During the assembly, students in grades 1-6 learned about a
summer program in which all will participate for prizes to be distributed at the beginning of school in August.
The Dunn Foundation Moonjar is an exciting program meant to teach children about money and the ideas of Saving,
Spending and Sharing. Like reading, writing and arithmetic, teaching children about money and saving is an important
and valuable life-skill lesson. The Dunn Foundation wants to promote financial literacy at St. Peter’s, starting in
kindergarten and running through sixth grade.
Dunn Foundation Moonjars encourage children to envision their dreams and creatively bring them to life. Dunn Foundation
Moonjars offer a visual and tactile beginning for children to understand how to use money and build a strong financial
foundation to reach their goals.
Three moneyboxes, one each for Saving, Spending and Sharing act as a teaching tool that connect wish-upon-a-star hopes
with conscientious decision making and financial objectives. Dunn Foundation Moonjars will also inspire positive family
communication, responsibility and commitment to the larger community. The importance of donating time
and talent as pieces of building strong individuals and communities was also discussed at the assembly and will continue to be
discussed during this project.
Students brought home their own Dunn Foundation Moonjar on Friday, June 3, and have an understanding of what it means and
how they should use it. The Student Council created a presentation for the assembly that was both informative and entertaining.
Throughout the summer, parents will receive seven emails containing information pertaining to the Save, Spend and Share concept.
The Dunn Foundation Board is also establishing a blog to enable interactive communication throughout the summer.
We can share our experiences
on the different aspects of Save, Spend and Share and how they affect our children, family and community.
As a final piece, the Dunn Foundation Board would like each student to create a picture or story about his/her experience
over the summer with the
Dunn Foundation Moonjar. Each child who enters a picture or story will receive a t-shirt and be eligible to receive additional
prizes, based on age groups.
Prizes will include money, to promote the Spend, Share, Save concept, as well as gift certificates, Spartanwear and more!
Parents, check your emails during the summer for age groups and prize details.
Thank you to Mrs. Maura Siegenthaler and Mr. Jay Allred, Dunn Foundation Board representatives who were part of the assembly.

RIGHT TO READ WEEK "AUTHOR VISIT"

A week full of activities at St. Peter's Elementary School celebrated the national Right to Read Week beginning Monday, May 23.
In addition to a door decorating contest, teachers swapping homerooms for a read-aloud session, and buddy readers
among different grade levels,a special visit was paid the students by guest author J. Patrick Lewis who was just named for a two-year tenure
by The Poetry Foundation as the nation’s third Children’s Poet Laureate: Consultant in Children’s Poetry.
Mr. Lewis emphasized to students during his presentation that to be an author, one must do two things: (1) be a reader and (2) buy a big waste basket for all those writings you would toss until you get the final product you like!

SISTER PAULA WILL RETIRE
Sister Paula Bingert will be retiring at the end of this school year after 35 years of serving as librarian at St. Peter's Elementary
School. The elementary staff decided to surprise her with a little gathering where Father Tom celebrated Mass and Father Tony
gave the homily. The staff presented her with a beautiful, framed photo of St. Francis and well wishes written by each staff
member on the matting of the framed print.
Sister Paula is looking forward to spending her time traveling to and from the public library, working in the Archives Room, and helping
anywhere she might be needed. Congratulations, Sister Paula.

HOUSE BILL 136
PARENTS!!!       Some VERY important information for our present school
families who pay tuition at St. Peter's!
One question on the HB136 FAQ sheet is:
What about students at my school who are already paying tuition? Would they be able to receive any help?
Yes. The bill includes a phase-in of eligibility for families who already attend private schools and pay
their own tuition. During the second year of the program, private school students in grades K-4 who do
not yet receive a voucher would be eligible. In the 3rd and 4th years of the program, students in K-8
and K-12, respectively, would become eligible.

HANUKKAH
The week-long lesson about Hanukkah for students in Mrs. Kurtzman's Kindergarten Enrichment class made for a pretty impressive
show of answers when she asked many questions during this photo session. They knew the names of kings, the reason
there was not enough oil for eight days, Hanukkah rituals, Haunkkah songs, the meaning of the Menorah, and much more.
Photos below of their class activities on Thursday.
MATH GRAPHING
And across the hall from the Kindergarten Enrichment classroom was Traditional Kindergarten. Using
Teddy Grahams crackers, students in Mrs. Carrier's Traditional Kindergarten class set out to do a math graphing project.

JUDGE KONSTAM'S COURTROOM
It was a big day in court for third graders! Set out to play the roles of jury members, prosecutor co-counsel,
defense co-counsel, and spectators, third graders paid close attention to all the instructions given by Judge Konstam
and the court bailiff as they listened to testimony from witnesses about the case of Susie Swinger, accused of stealing
Sammy Schwinn's bicycle at school.
After all testimony and closing arguments were made by real-life attorneys who graciously played along with the mock
trial, the jury moved to the jury room for heated discussion about whether Susie Swinger was guilty or not guilty.
This mock trial was an
excellent lesson on the court system. Thank you, Judge Konstam, and members of the Family Court
staff who participated! Photos below.
MONSIGNOR DUNN
Monsignor Dunn celebrated Mass on Wednesday with all students in the elementary, junior high and high schools. The high
school liturgical music group led all in song and Minisingers sang a special hymn near the end of Mass. The favorite "I Will Lift Your
Name On High" was the closing song.

Music teachers Mrs. Beverly Brook, Miss Jaclyn Kurtz and Mr. Bill Johnson joined Columbus Handbells member, Jennifer Fry, in the elementary
music lab last week as Jennifer instructed the students on proper use of playing handbells.
The St. Peter's Music Series season kicks off with an
exciting performance by Handbells Columbus. This incredible
14-member group brings their amazing sound
and repertoire of sacred and classical selections to St. Peter’s

Columbus have made concert appearances throughout
Central Ohio and are featured in a new Handbell/

some of the most noted Handbell composers of our

BUTTERFLY FLYING!!!!
The butterfly in Mrs. Snyder's classroom finally hatched from its chrysalis while they were at Mass this week.
They set it free that morning in Father Tony's backyard. The photos below show the chrysalis becoming transparent, the
butterfly hanging from the chrysalis, and the students setting it free.
And, in case you were wondering, the butterfly is named Spike! Thank you to Mrs. Snyder for sending these photos!

15TH CENTURY MUSIC MANUSCRIPT
Mrs. Brook showed the fourth grade students in her music class a 15th century music manuscript.
While small groups of students
took turns viewing the manuscript up close, others worked at their desk on another assignment.
Mrs. Brook pointed out things like the
clef symbols, music notes that were written with dyes made from plants, the pigskin "paper" with
holes from the hairs that were pulled,
eraser marks by the monk who most likely wrote the music and other special characteristics.
What a special treat these students
had to see something like this!

take about two weeks for the complete metamorphosis into a
butterfly and she promises to send us more photos as the process continues.
