FRANCISCAN SISTERS CELEBRATION

Parishioners were invited to join the Franciscan Sisters on October 9 in celebration of the 140 years the Sisters have ministered to the families of St. Peter’s. A great crowd joined the Sisters at the 11:30 Mass that was followed by a reception in the Atrium.

The note (below) appeared in the Sunday bulletin the week following and was written by Sister Paula Bingert and Sister Bernard Marie Campbell.

From the Sisters: Our first Reverend Mother made a wise decision when she sent two Sisters to St. Peter's Parish. Last Sunday you generously and joyously celebrated 140 years with us. A sincere thank you to the music director and choir, the celebrant and ministers, the banner maker, and all of you who were present for the Mass. Our thanks to all who made the reception at the Franciscan Activity Center so special, particularly the Serra Club, the funeral luncheon teams and the Centennial hospitality committee. We appreciate your many cards, gifts, greetings and especially your presence. You are the greatest! Thank you.

ST. PETER'S BOY SCOUT TROOP 121 HEADING TO PHILMONT, NEW MEXICO IN 2012

Consecutively chartered by St. Peter's Parish since 1950, Troop 121 currently consists of 24 registered Scouts, 12 adult leaders and 21 Committee members. Fifteen Scouts and eight adult leaders will be going to the Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, New Mexico in June of 2012. The trip will consist of riding the Amtrak train to New Mexico followed by 12 days of backpacking over 70 miles through the 137,000 acre mountainous terrain.

The life skills these young men experience on the trail will be invaluable throughout the rest of their lives. They will learn the importance of teamwork, self-reliance, and perseverance. As an adult, they will be able to draw on these experiences when times are tough and will be able to continue when others give up.

The Scouts and Scout leaders have been working hard in preparation for their trip both physically and financially. Physically they have already hiked over 51 miles throughout the state of Ohio.

Scouts have been holding various fund raising events throughout the year, including selling popcorn, parking cars, holding bake sales, and picking up trash.

Most recently, the Mansfield Y Running Club teamed up with St. Peter's Boy Scout Troop 121 to host a 5K race. The Trek or Treat 5K Run/Walk took place on October 23, 2011, through the creepy, spooky, and possibly haunted Woodland Neighborhood of Mansfield, Ohio. Runners from all over the state participated-215 total!

The 5K was an awesome way to benefit St. Peter's Boy Scout troop 121's 2012 contingent trip to Philmont Scout Ranch while putting focus on physical fitness for both youth and adults all while giving back to our community.

This is another example of the strong traditions that St. Peter's Boy Scout troop 121 is a part of today because of the generous support, great leadership and guidance of the Scout leaders, Scout parents, parishioners and adult committee members of St. Peter's Boy Scout Troop 121.

BLESSING OF THE PETS

Everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even llamas, are blessed during a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets. On Sunday, October 2, Father Gregory Hite, pastor of St. Peter's Parish, conducted the blessing. This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. The feast day of St. Francis is October 4. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things. “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.”

FIRST COMMUNION - MAY 2011

Enjoy this beautiful photo of First Communion, May 1, 2011.

AN INTERESTING STORY

The story is that this past Saturday (May 21, 2011) a young guy named Chip Valleriano came to St. Peter’s for a visit with his parents. They are from Cleveland. Chip works for Case Western and is in the process of having a book of his published by Kent State. The book is about William Ginther – the architect who designed St. Peter’s.

Chip had no idea we had been celebrating the Centennial. He even said that he and his parents thought about coming down the weekend before, but the rain held them off.

He had never seen a complete set of blueprints of Ginther’s – so Bill Johnson burned him a copy of the disc of blueprints. He was so grateful that when he got home he sent us scans of all of the pages of Ginther’s portfolio that had anything to do with St. Peter’s. Those are the pictures displayed here.

Sister Paula had never seen the interior of our church this way before. She was excited to see the photos.

The significance of the two interior pics of St. Peter’s (they are labeled and not to be confused with the interior pic of St. Bernard’s in Akron on the Schantz ad) is that they were both taken before the stained glass windows were installed – so between 1916 and 1921. The picture looking toward the rear of the church was taken before construction was completed – note no communion rail and no organ. The picture was taken from a position behind where the old high altar is. If the high altar had been installed, they wouldn’t have been able to take the picture. The other interior faces the front of the church after construction was completed but before the stained glass was installed. Pretty great pictures!

FATHER CHRIS WILL BE MOVING JULY 1

At Sunday Masses on April 11, Father Chris explained his new assignment as of July 1, 2010.

Hi Everyone! -- Welcome back from Easter. I hope it was a refreshing time for you and your families!

I received a call from the Bishop's Office this past week. The Bishop has asked me to take on a new assignment, effective July 1, and I have accepted.

The assignment is two-fold. First, I will be the Chaplain for the newly formed Bishop Hoffman Catholic Schoool in Fremont. This school is being formed from the three existing parish schools in Fremont (St. Ann's, Sacred Heart, and St. Joseph's). My primary responsibility will be to St. Joseph's Central Catholic High School. I will live at one of the parish rectories in Fremont.

I will also have Chaplain responsibilities to the Lake Erie Island parishes. These two parishes are Mother of Sorrows Parish, Put-in-Bay and St. Michael's Parish, Kelley's Island. I will be there on the weekends to have Mass and also attend to the other sacramental needs of the parishes. The day-to-day affairs of the parish are already handled by the Pastoral Leader, Sr. Lucille Kime.

Your prayers during this time of transition are much appreciated. I have truly enjoyed these last three years at St. Peter's and I will miss this community so much!

With sincere gratitude,

Rev. Christopher Bazar
Associate Pastor

WOVEN ALTAR CLOTH

The new green altar cloth and ambo panels used during this Ordinary Season at St. Peter's were hand woven and donated by Don Yockey. It was first used and blessed by Father Chris on Saturday, June 20, 2009.

Don started weaving about seventeen years ago, shortly after helping to start the Malabar Farm Spinning and Weaving Guild. He has woven rugs, towel, scarves, etc., including nine yards of McDonald Tartan which he used for making his green kilt. He has also donated several hand-woven items for the parish festival.

The altar cloth and panels were made of 10/2 pearl cotton and woven on an eight-harness floor loom. The pattern was Don's own design, adapted from a huck lace pattern. There are twelve huck lace crosses across the cloth representing the twelve apostles. There are three huck lace crosses down each ambo panel to represent the Trinity.

Thank you to Don for this beautiful gift to our parish!

CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES

Please continue to pray for our Confirmation candidates as they finish their preparation to receive the sacrament on October 25. The August class involved working together to constuct a building out of marshmallows and toothpicks and getting the hula hoop around the circle of candidates while blindfolded. Much was learned by having to work together to accomplish the goals. Thank you to Sheila Herhiser for the photos below.
